Takeaways From Mike McCarthy OTA’s Presser

Well, Mike McCarthy addressed the media after Tuesday’s OTA’s. In one of the most stilted press conferences I have seen. It started abruptly…and it ended abruptly. Obviously McCarthy has more important things to do than talk to the media. Do I blame him? No…I do not.

McCarthy has a LOT on his plate, including…well…making right the oh, so wrong of last season’s NFC Championship, where the lesser team continued on to the Super Bowl. But McCarthy did say that the team was working on its redzone offense today which is an important piece in the team’s success moving forward. Redzone offense was a thorn in the flesh of the the Packers last season (yes, I know we were good statistically) and especially in the final regular season game against the Lions. The Packers look to improve their redzone performance with the continued progress of young players like Devante Adams and Richard Rodgers.

On defense, McCarthy said that BJ Raji “looks great”. This is a big boon for the Packers defense which means that it may be stouter inside than ever. With the use of Clay Matthews on the inside, and the possible coming of age of players like Carl Bradford and Jake Ryan, this defense could be a bit of a project for McCarthy in some ways but also could be a real boon going forward. I think the return of BJ could be one of the most underrated and most important factors in the Packers’ 2015 defense.

But McCarthy spoke about the offense too and in particular, the quarterback position. We all know that Aaron Rodgers is the best in the business…but McCarthy had good things to say about the progress of Scott Tolzien, saying Tolzien has “made great strides”. He said that Tolzien’s footwork is intact and that he is progressing and doing less thinking and more playing on the field. Tolzien will hopefully never see the field this coming season but in a pinch, it is good to know that he is progressing in the absence of Matt Flynn.

So the team is making progress Packernation. There is excitement in the air and football on the field and this year’s team is coming together. I just couldn’t be more excited for a season to come around and give Packernation another chance at greatness. This was the best team in the league last season….with some tweaks…this could be a special 2015 season looking forward to a Super Bowl 50 that deserves a team like the Green Bay Packers to make it EPIC!

Go Pack!
