Packers vs PanthersPackers have a lot to clean up if they expect to win against the Carolina Panthers this week. Here are my top three critical factors going into the game.

#1 Stop the Run

The Packers absolutely have to find a way to slow down a really potent Panthers rushing game. Jonathan Stewart is a hammer. He can be wrapped up by five or six opponents and still be carrying the pile down field.

Most Dangerous Substance on Earth - Packer Offense

You can never count him down until he’s actually on the turf. In fact he reminds me a lot of a Eddie Lacy… when Eddie Lacy is running like Eddie Lacy.

The other aspect of the Panthers’ rushing offense that the Packer defense going to have to account for is Cam Newton in the read option. The Packers did a great job against Colin Kaepernick in the 49ers read option, but Cam Newton is a different animal altogether. He’s less like a giraffe and more like a big horn sheep. Unlike most quarterbacks in the league he’s not afraid to lower his head and drive for needed yardage.

#2 Get Lacy and Starks Rolling

The second thing the Packers are going to need to do if they expect to beat the Carolina Panthers is start building some momentum with the run game. I think this starts upfront with our offense of line. Both Lacy and Starks can blow holes to some degree, but they can’t do it play after play after play.
At some point our highly prized offense of line needs to start moving some bodies and making some holes. Then our running backs can start laying the hammer in the second and third level instead of against 300 pound big bodies.

#3 Get Receivers Open

Somehow, someway, the Packer receivers need to get open. Now, all the Packer receivers, during their interviews, have claimed responsibility for not getting open. While I think that’s noble, I think it’s only 40% of the issue. If you rewatch the game against the Broncos, you’ll see the play calling especially on our vertical routes was very vanilla. The Broncos have good quality defensive backs, but even a poor defensive back could probably have stuck with our receivers on those routes.

We Can Do It!

The good news is, that the Packers can absolutely do all of these things. We have shown that we can stop or at least slow down premier backs. We’ve prove that we can contain a mobile quarterback that uses the read option. And we’ve proved, that, even without Jordy Nelson, the Packer receiving corps cannot be taken lightly.

If the Packers can do all these things, we will win this game. Go Pack go!
