What We Learned Against the Falcons

The big-time win over New England was not followed up with perfection in Week 14. Though the   Packers walked away with a win, Mike McCarthy cannot be happy about his team’s blown 24-point halftime lead, which hinges primarily on the defense. The pass rush was largely ineffective versus a poor Atlanta offensive line – not the type of performance that any head coach wants to see at home during a playoff push. The Packers did put on some Super Bowl-caliber display versus Atlanta – at least on the offensive side of the ball. Eddie Lacy was provided with excellent…

After taking down the Pats, Mike McCarthy’s Packers are flying high and host the Falcons in their first Monday night appearance of the season. Four of Atlanta’s five wins have come against divisional opponents, which are not considered much of a resume builder this season. Tied with the Saints atop of the NFC South, a lot is on the line for the Falcons this week. The Falcons ranked dead last in the league in both pass defense and total defense, having given up lots of points to a number of modest offenses (Giants, Vikings and Ravens). To no surprise, Atlanta…

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers quieted the critics on Sunday, with a 26-21 victory over just about everyone’s Super Bowl favorites. And, while the game was not over until the final possession, the final score was not truly indicative of how much better the Packers played than the Patriots. Not enough can be said about the performance of the Packers offensive line on Sunday. Despite having to face mostly three and four-man rushes, the front five still gave Rodgers all day to throw. Rodgers received such great protection from his O-line that he could have easily thrown for over 400…

While Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots may not be a must-win for the Packers, the result will surely provide some insight into the type of play that Mike McCarthy’s team is capable of delivering against quality opponents in the postseason. Though the Packers and Patriots share a number of similarities, the quality of wins between the two teams varies greatly. New England has beaten each of their last four opponents by 22 points or more, including lopsided wins over the play-bound Broncos, Colts and Lions. Meanwhile, the Packers’ most impressive win of the season came two weeks ago…

What We Learned Against the Vikings

Many fans shrugged off the notion that last Sunday’s game versus the Vikings would be a trap game – but were unpleasantly surprised in the Packers’ narrow 24-21 win over Minnesota. Perhaps looking ahead to their Week 14 meeting with the Patriots, the Packers were surprised by their division rivals, nearly dropping an important in-division game that could have tie-breaker implications. If it weren’t for the sporadic play of Teddy Bridgewater, the Packers might still share the NFC North lead with Detroit. Sluggish play from the Green Bay secondary gave Bridgewater a number of opportunities to move the chains and…
