Just What the Packers Need?

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

This season, the Packers have jump started a couple of team's seasons. The loss against the Bengals in the second game of the season helped Cincinnati get over the week one crazy loss against the Broncos and get them recognized on the NFL scene. Then, the Packers actually fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, giving up almost forty points and throwing our beloved team and the fans that love them into a tizzy while the Bucs found an new starting quarterback. Last weekend, the Packers travelled to Heinz field to give hope to the downtrodden Steelers in a touchdown reminiscent of the Super Bowl score that made them the reigning champions.

Many of us in the blogosphere warned Packers fans not to get too excited about the then current winning streak that took the Packers up to the Steelers game. I had predicted this game as a loss because of Ben Roethlisberger's ability to scramble and our weakness in the nickel and dime packages. Plus, we all knew that having an inconsistent kicking game (notice I said kicking game, not Mason Crosby) would hurt us eventually. We saw those fears come to fruition as the Steelers scored on the first play from scrimmage and the last play from scrimmage. And Mason Crosby missed another makeable kick in a one point loss.

This week, the Seahawks come to town and this team is just what the Packers need to get back on track before the playoffs. While the Packers dropped to 12th in total passing defense, the Seahawks are ranked 29th. The Packers are still second in rushing defense, while the Seahawks rank 13th. Overall, the Pack, even after a subpar performance last weekend, still rank second to the Jets and the Seahawks are 24th overall.

Perhaps the Seahawks are just what the Packers need going in to the final game of the season vs. Arizona, and will give us some momentum going into the playoffs.
