It’s Not Over ‘Til It’s Over

The year was 2003. Brett Favre was the starting quarterback for the Packers and the Packers were on the fast track to packing their cleats up for another season. Then…

The first of two plays that will always rank among the most exciting in my history with the Packers happened.

I was sitting alone in my living room, slumped into my chair and watching the game (as usual). The Packers defense was dominating the Denver Broncos and Brett was slinging the rock as well as ever. But, it didn’t matter. The Packers needed a win but they also needed the 9-6 Vikings to lose to the 3-12 Cardinals. My entire demeanor said the season was over.

Then, the station cut to the final minutes of the Vikings-Cardinals game and I raised up in my chair a bit. Could this be happening? The Vikings were desperately clinging to a lead in the waning moments of the game.

Then, this happened…

At that moment, I jumped out of my chair and shouted, “Touchdown! The Packers are in the playoffs.”

That moment, among others, have convinced me to never count the Packers out until they are mathematically eliminated from any chance of making the playoffs.

This season has been a heartbreaking one to say the least. I was so excited to get Jordy Nelson back on the field, and, while I didn’t expect him to produce like the Jordy Nelson of 2014, I certainly expected the Packer offense to get back to averaging 30 points a game. That hasn’t happened but the cries of “the season’s over” disappoint me because we should always believe in this team. Until I work the numbers and realize that there are no more paths to the playoffs for the Packers, I will believe that they can get there. I’ll don my Packer gear and climb into my chair in preparation for the opening kickoff.

And maybe… just maybe… they’ll find a way to make another playoff appearance. And maybe… just maybe… that first playoff appearance will be as exciting as the one in 2003 which, incidentally, is another of my favorite plays in history. This…
