Damarious Randall had a rough year last year and the Packers will need to him to improve if they want to have success in 2017. There is reason to believe in improved play based on his health alone. With an off-season to recover, Randall should be in full health as the season begins. But there is another reason that Packer Nation should see improvement out of Randall.

One of the stories that came out of OTA’s and minicamp this year was news that Randall has been practicing at the “star” or slot corner position. This bodes well for Randall and for a Packers defense that needs to find a replacement for the departed Micah Hyde. Randall is one of the more experienced cornerbacks on the roster and as a former first round pick, the Packers will not soon give up on him. Randall isn’t giving up on himself either and the slot position may just be the ticket.

Most Dangerous Substance on Earth - Packer Offense

Randall’s move to the slot is made possible in part by the return of Davon House and the drafting of Kevin King.  Those two changes give the Packers a possible replacement for Sam Shields. Whether it is King or House that ends up the number one, I expect King to be the perimeter guy eventually with House. Again, this plays to the strength of Randall, how do I know?

Damarious Randall played perimeter corner for 297 snaps last year according to Pro Football Focus in those snaps, he gave up a passer rating of 121.6 on the left side (254 snaps) and 124.0 on the right (43 snaps). This is not good as the highest passer rating is 158.3. Randall struggled on the perimeter…that much is true. But the numbers in the slot are significantly better. Randall only allowed a 61.5 passer rating in the left slot and a 66.0 passer rating on the right. This is more than serviceable, it is quite good.

Randall looks to have a bounce-back year and his health will help immensely. But the move to the star cornerback position may be just the ticket. Plus, Randalls explosiveness means the Packers may find a replacement to Micah Hyde and at the same time find exactly the right spot for a first round draft choice. All in all…it could pay dividends for a Packers defense that has to be better if they want to reach their ultimate goal.

Go Pack!
