R&R Free Agency

I’ve not written a post for a while but feel the need to vent, All the chatter about Thompson dabbling in free agency has me thinking could this be the year? Rodgers came out and kind of put the head honchos on the spot by hinting it’s time to get aggressive with some top help.

The release of Shields and Starks opens up a big chunk of cap space. Matthews could restructure his contract this year as well so Ted could get crazy along with other teams when free agency starts instead of waiting for all the high priced players to sign elsewhere.

First of all, Ted needs to get his own people signed, like Perry, while most say he’s a bust he had his best season and this with a broken hand so he has turned into a top edge rusher like we hoped he would, personally I would like to see Peppers return on a one year deal if the price is right and Lacy is another who could get a “prove it” type deal.

Now back to signing a top player. I believe the cornerback position should be the market Ted goes after, they need a veteran player to help out and these are the top ten in my opinion so going after one of these players could be feasible.

Malcolm Butler (RFA), CB, Patriots. Age: 27.

Malcolm Butler went from being an undrafted free agent out of West Alabama, to an unknown guy who made a huge play in a Super Bowl, to one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. His transformation has been amazing,

A.J. Bouye, CB, Texans. Age: 26.

A.J. Bouye came out of nowhere to have a Pro Bowl season for the Texans. Bouye was just a reserve/special-teamer prior to 2016, but he inexplicably turned into a shutdown cornerback. This is the guy I would love to see play in GB

Trumaine Johnson, CB, Rams. Age: 27.

Trumaine Johnson is an excellent cornerback who has about four more years remaining in his prime, given that he just turned 27. Johnson struggles to tackle, but he’s phenomenal as a cover cornerback.

Logan Ryan, CB, Patriots. Age: 26.

Logan Ryan struggled to start the 2016 campaign, but bounced back and performed on a very high level once again down the stretch. Ryan has been great the past two years

Stephon Gilmore, CB, Bills. Age: 26.

Stephon Gilmore had been an excellent cornerback heading into 2016, but he struggled last year. It’s unclear why he regressed, but it’s likely that he’ll rebound.

Prince Amukamara, CB, Jaguars. Age: 28.

Prince Amukamara signed a 1-year “prove it” deal with the Jaguars last offseason. Prove himself he did, as Amukamara missed just a couple of games. He performed on a high level in 2016 so he could fill the need the Packers are missing.

Morris Claiborne, CB, Cowboys. Age: 27.

It’s crazy to think Morris Claiborne was considered a colossal bust prior to this past season. Claiborne had done nothing but suck since being chosen sixth overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, but he performed like a shutdown corner this past season before getting hurt. Was that because he was in his contract year, though? Will he stink again if he signs a big deal? This is why Ted would have to be cheap on a one year deal but have incentives so he will play hard.

Deshawn Shead (RFA), CB, Seahawks. Age: 29.

The Seahawks needed a No. 2 cornerback after losing Byron Maxwell, and Deshawn Shead stepped up. Shead was terrific in 2016.

Ross Cockrell, CB, Steelers. Age: 26.

The Bills selected Ross Cockrell in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. They cut him, and the Steelers were able to greatly benefit, as Cockrell has been a very solid starter for them over the past couple of seasons.

Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Bengals. Age: 27.

Dre Kirkpatrick has been a disappointment for most of his career, but he finally performed on a high level in 2016. Kirkpatrick certainly has the talent to keep playing well.
Knowing Ted, none of this will ever happen but we can all dream right? He will most likely sign Perry but that will be it, Unless Peppers and Lacy agree to small one year deals they will walk, Matthews won’t restructure because he knows his time is almost up and will milk the team for all he can get.

So Thompson will sit back and rely on the draft again like he always does and the team will play well enough to get in the post season and lose again because Thompson is just too stubborn to take a big chance on an all-in season.

While I like the way the team is always in the mix, Just for once I would like to see a Reggie White move to get this team over the hump.

Okay, thanks for letting me rant so let us know your thoughts in the comments below or the FB homepage.

Thanks, Jeff

Clay Matthews should take a pay cut if he wants to stay with the Packers. They should sign a release you to a one year deal with incentives including his contract he does not have that much bargaining power. Aaron Rodgers should restructure his contract as Tom Brady has done before and many other quarterbacks . I also heard rumors of cutting Randall Cobb that’s crazy he took a pay cut to stay here compared to Oakland . The Green Bay Packers spend a lot of money on defense why not spend it wisely conerbacks are a must they also need a strong defense of end . Ted Thompson should retire in hand the reins over to Elliot . There’s my rant have a great day go pack go
