Packer Nation was most excited to see Aaron Rodgers out on the field on Saturday. The team has a lot to look forward to with young quarterbacks Brett Hundley and Joe Callahan. But Taysom Hill is making a case that he should be on the 53 and Callahan may have something to prove before the close of the 2017 pre-season.

Aaron Rodgers’ 15 play touchdown drive ending in the 3 yard touchdown to Martellus Bennett is no surprise. Rodgers and the Packers’ offense diced the Washington defense on the ground and through the air, including a 13 yard first down scamper by the man himself. Brett Hundley came out and had a 90% completion rate in a performance that coach Mike McCarthy said was Hundley’s best as a Packer.

But one of the surprises of the night was Joe Callahan, who completed one pass for zero yards and looked nothing like his week one self. Enter Taysom Hill…

Hill had a nice showing against the Eagles with a 7 yard touchdown pass to Michael Clark. That touchdown pass capped a drive that showed that Hill has the arm and the legs to be a dangerous quarterback. Hill’s mobility is off the charts but he needs to prove that he can handle all the peripheral duties of the NFL quarterback, namely, checks, moving protection and getting the team into the right plays every time.

But regardless, Taysom Hill has shown that he is the kind of quarterback that can push Callahan for the number three spot (which could become the number two spot) on the Packers’ team. Hill has improved in each contest and with a strong finish certainly has to be in the running for a place with the Packers. Hill was six of eleven for 49 yards through the air and capped off a night in which he led the team in rushing with a 23 yard touchdown run in a 6 rush for 38 yard overall effort.

The Packers’ game against the Broncos will be a big test for Hill and company. Long travel, thin air, dehydration and fatigue will be battles they face before they even hit the field. Callahan will be looking to bounce back and show that he can handle the offense. As for Hill, I think many in Packer Nation will be wondering “What’s next?”. Perhaps Hill can roll out with Rodgers as a Flex back, and show his versatility and ability to run and throw the ball.

Regardless, the Packers’ coaching staff has to be intrigued with a player that, while he is a quarterback, could very easily be plugged in eventually at other positions if he has the time to learn them. Taysom Hill is exactly that kind of player.

G0 Pack!
