With an excellent draft, the Packers could position themselves to make another serious shot at the Big Dance even after the exit of several long-term players. Of course, the first pick at number 29 is extremely important and hotly debated but it is the overall combination of picks that the Packers bring in that may be the true difference in this year’s draft. PackerNation has its view of how this year’s draft should play out. Here are a few scenarios…pick your favorite below!

1. Cornerback, edge, running back

Round one: Garreon Conley CB, Ohio State. The Packers truly need to get the cornerback situation  and they get it done right away in round one with Conley. Conley likely comes in as a rookie who is also one of the best CB’s on the team.

Most Dangerous Substance on Earth - Packer Offense

Round two: Takk McKinley DE/OLB UCLA. In this scenario, the Cowboys snag Taco Charlton and McKinley takes an unexpected tumble. If the Packers have him on the board at the end of round two…it would be hard to see them passing up this edge rusher who could be a great addition to a defense that no longer has Julius Peppers.

Round three: Alvin Kamara, RB Tennessee. The Packers have some question marks at the running back position and the addition of Kamara would be a nice complement to Ty Montgomery. In a pass-first offense, alongside Ty Montgomery…Kamara would shine.

2. Running back, cornerback, edge

Round one: Dalvin Cook, RB FSU. In this scenario, the Packers grab a top running back in the first and defensive coordinators quake in their boots.

Round two: Sidney Jones, CB Wash. The Pack comes back with a second round pick that is admittedly not part of their template. Jones tore his achilles at his pro day but before that was considered the best cornerback in a deep draft and a mid-first round pick at the latest. They will be proven genius if Jones returns to form and the Packers’ defensive backfield could definitely use a boost. Davon House is likely not the “answer”.

Round three: Dawuane Smoot, DE/OLB Illinois. The Packers come back with an edge rusher who has been severely under-rated. Nice pickup.

3. Cornerback, trade, running back

Round one: Marlon Humphrey, CB Alabama. Humphrey is still on the board…best player available…Ted Thompson pulls the trigger. The defensive backfield gets and immediate upgrade in a player that will be a day one starter.

Round two: Packers swap second round picks and a forth and trade up to get TJ Watt. Watt was a first rounder according to the masses, but a second rounder based on the scouting reports. The Packers don’t wait and give up a little to make sure the Wisconsin native stays home.

Round three: Joe Mixon, RB Oklahoma. The Packers see Mixon on the board in the third round and simply cannot pass on one of the best backs in a deep class of running backs. Mixon comes with a lot of character questions but the Packers’ meeting with Mixon apparently allayed their fears. Thompson couldn’t say he was a “best player available” GM and explain passing on Mixon.
