Random Thoughts

I do a lot of writing about the Packers, but sometimes what I have to say just doesn't fit in my other blogs. However, everything fits here. It's just random.

Grudge Holding Packer Fan

Mike Davidsen's latest article on the Top Five Most Exciting Games of the Past Three Seasons revealed a side of my Packer fan nature that I have never been conscious of before.

I'm a bit of a grudge holder.

Seeing Brett connect with Greg Jennings to beat the Broncos in overtime continues to elicit great satisfaction from me. And, the satisfaction didn't just come from sticking it to the Broncos in the waning minutes of that game. No, it went far deeper than that. And farther back too.

I remember the season leading up to the Packers most recent Super Bowl win being a bit of a fight. Teams didn't roll over easily and the Packers earned everything they got. The following year things were a bit different. Aside from stumbling against the Colts, the Pack pretty much walked all over everyone they met. It seemed like back-to-back Super Bowls was just a matter of time.

Unfortunately, in the Super Bowl that year, the Packers played flat and the Broncos played the game of their lives. I realize now that I've never gotten over that one. So, I love seeing the Packers stick it to those lucky suckers any time we can.

Welcome to the Green Bay Packers Bryan

jraugustine Posted by: jraugustine |

Bryan Bulaga is now a Green Bay Packer and I'm thrilled. I really hoped Ted would go with a defensive back in the first pick of the draft, but there's no question we got a solid pick in Bryan Bulaga.

It's even better that we have Clifton and Tauscher back. Now we can give Bryan and the other young offensive linemen a chance to learn the game from some great players and some time to develop themselves.

Day two of the draft is here and I'm sure Ted has some good picks up his sleeve, but getting Bulaga was a great start.

2010 Draft Rumor

There's been a rumor going around today that Thompson is going to trade up to somewhere in the 10-12 range this year.

I just can't see it happening.

Ted has always been concerned about money. Some might call him a tightwad. Oh, he spends money once in a while, but he's very careful and only does that when he thinks it's necessary.

This draft has a ton of talent in all the positions that the Packers need help. I expect Thompson will either stay at position 23 or even trade down to stock up on picks.

Either way, the draft is coming fast and I can't wait to find out what Thompson has up his sleeve.

The 2010 Draft

I've been trying to figure out Ted Thompson's drafting strategy for years now. He claims he doesn't draft for need, but he also doesn't seem to always be picking the best player available either. He typically tries to pick up more selections later in the draft, but sometimes will surprise us by trading up in the draft to pick up a key player.

I've come to the decision that, for the most part, Thompson's drafting strategy revolves around money. If he thinks he can get a top player who's well worth the money (e.g. Clay Matthews), he'll trade up, but for the most part Ted seems content to get out of the expensive first round and do his best work in the later rounds where player price tags are more reasonable.

This year the draft is packed with players who would fill some of the final holes the Packers have in their roster. It seems like a great year for Ted to trade down for more picks. Regardless, it'll be interesting to see what TT has up his sleeve for the 2010 draft.
