Well with the draft in the books and a day to think about it…we want to know what packernation thinks! How did Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy do in this year’s draft? Grade each pick below and we will post the results. Don’t let the national media draftniks tell you what to think about this year’s draft…make your opinion known!
From what Ted Thompson has said after the draft, the Packers stayed true to their best player available philosophy for the entire draft. The Packers first pick was one that was hoped for by many, but not all in Packernation. A safety with a lot of range who can also come up and play the run. Here’s the rundown on the entire draft class:
1. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
2. Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State
3a. Khyri Thornton, DE, Southern Mississippi
3b. Richard Rodgers, TE, California
4. Carl Bradford, LB, Arizona State
5a. Corey Linsley, C, Ohio State
5b. Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin
6. Demetri Goodson, CB, Baylor
7. Jeff Janis, WR, Saginaw Valley State
As we grade this year’s draft, I know a lot of people are going to be wondering why there weren’t more defensive players drafted. Remember Ted’s “BPA” philosophy, it seemed like this year, there weren’t any ties where a defensive player and the BPA were close enough to tip the scales for need. Some may vehemently disagree with me but I think the Green Bay Packers defense is not just going to be better, I think it will be vastly improved next season. The only question is health. So the drafting of, in particular, three wider receivers is to me a positive in the pass-happy NFL. The talent we got to replace James Jones quite frankly could be scary (to other teams, that is) and I can’t wait to see these guys develop.
Before the draft, I said there was a very good chance that we get an absolute gem out of the later rounds this season because of the depth of this year’s draft. The deepest position in this draft was wide receiver so it is no surprise to me that we ended up stockpiling at that position. While I am super stoked to have Jared Abbrederis as a Green Bay Packer, I am also keeping a close eye on Jeff Janis, who I think could develop into a real talent.
But I’m gonna stop rambling now…let us know what YOU think!
