AM Quickslant: The Missing Piece to the Packers Defense

“The day this Packers defense finds a vocal leader who can walk the talk is the day the Packers go from perennial playoff team to dynasty.”

Well Mike Daniels has been in the news this off-season. This guy obviously has what it takes to be a mikedanielsdifference maker on the Packers D-line. And this D-line has every indication of improvement with BJ Raji back at nose tackle, getting healthy, Datone Jones expected to make a big step forward, and the addition of Julius Peppers (D-line…OLB…doesn’t matter!) But there is one thing that Mike Daniels brings to the Packers defense that it has been missing for too long…

A New Attitude

Daniels has brought a new attitude to the Packers defense and that has been missing for a long time. Sure back in 2010 the Packers defense was a “ball hawking” defense. But the turnovers have not been a factor since which leads me to believe that the Packers defense needs something else…a NEW attitude. They say defenses win championships and with the Packers’ always potent offense, a top 10 defense could put them over the top. In fact, I would say that the day this Packers defense finds a vocal leader who can walk the talk is the day the Packers go from perennial playoff-but-disappointed team to dynasty. With the moves the Packers made this offseason and the players coming back that were missed, a new attitude is the missing link.

The new attitude starts up front where Mike Daniels has led the way in making sure that this year’s Packers D is a smash-mouth, in your face group of guys who expect to deliver blows rather than watch comrades fall time and time again. This defense has needed a new attitude, and Daniels is bringin’ it! I am excited to see how that attitude translates from the locker room media sessions to the football field.

It is amazing how much of a difference attitude can make when it comes to a defensive unit. This Packers defense is loaded with high draft picks, many of which have yet to meet their potential. A new attitude and a different expectation by some of the guys who have been there a year or two could make all the difference. That, and staying healthy…

Attitude on defense helps the defense impose its will on the offense. The Seahawks have done a good job of this in the recent past. But this Packers defense…led by Daniels, could be the linchpin if the 2014 Packers are going to get where they and all of packernation want them to be by the end of next season.

It’s all about to begin with training camp starting this Saturday and Packernation is as pumped as ever! We all know if the defense turns a corner, the sky is the limit for this year’s Packers team!

GO PACK!!!
