Vince Wilfork, the Patriots nose tackle, tweeted that the Patriots are not going to pick up his option. With the Packers nose tackle position being in question this year, (Guion with his legal issues and Bj Raji coming off torn biceps last year) a guy like Wilfork could be a pickup along the lines of a Ryan Pickett in ’06. He was not a sexy player, but made a difference in the Super Bowl run. Wilfork would be that type of guy, especially as a 3-4 nose because his job would mostly be to take up space. But at the same time, the Packers would likely improve the run game and with a solid middle linebacker pickup either through the draft or in free agency…this could be a synergistic move. The whole might be greater than the sum of its parts.
Wilfork posted 47 tackles and one interception in 2014. He has registered 516 combined tackles, 16 sacks, four forced fumbles, 12 fumble recoveries and three interceptions through 11 seasons with the Patriots. So for the right price lets say in the range of 3.5 million a year for 3 years could this run stopper be the answer to shore up the middle on a struggling Packer defense? With his age they may even get him on a prove it one year deal like they offered Raji. Either way the team needs to address the middle of the line this year whether it be with Raji or taking the chance Guion will not be suspended the answer could come in a veteran like Wilfork if the price is right.
