Packers Receive Compensatory Draft Picks

ttThe NFL’s annual meeting in Arizona saw 14 teams receive a total of 32 compensatory draft picks. The choices are given to teams who have a net loss of free agents from the previous year (losing more this year than they acquired the year before) up to 4 picks max. Picks can also be awarded based to a team that loses a better player and acquires a lesser one (based on salary, playing time, awards and honors etc.) even though there is no net loss or gain. The placement of the picks also varies as part of the formula. The Packers are one of the league leaders in terms of compensatory picks and this year received two extra choices in the draft. Both picks are in the 6th round (pick numbers 210, 212) so the Packers will pick in the number 30 spot in each of the 7 rounds but in the sixth round will make their compensatory selections at picks number 210 and 212.

So with nine picks, will Ted Thompson and the Packers stand pat and pick right down the line? ron 1There has been talk of TT trading out of the end of the first round to a team that is desperate to get back into the first. Early in his time with Green Bay, Thompson got the reputation of being a GM who likes to trade down and stockpile picks. Lately though, he has done less of that. I believe that Ted stockpiled picks early on until he had the Packers in the kind of shape with the kind of depth that he wanted and now will be more likely to stand pat. That said, the #30 spot is a tantalizing trade position. If the right suitor came along, I would not be at all surprised to see Green Bay drop out of the first round to choose early in the second and receive an extra pick.

Go Pack!

With the team in a rebuilding stage with 4 positions I could see them trading down to a team in the top 15 for another pick. At 30 if there is a highly rated Corner,ILB,NT or TE available he will use it but if their grade is less than a 5.9 don’t be surprised if he trades

I agree with Jeff with the exception of TE, we have that in Rodgers, for now. The defense is weak in the middle for run stopping. If the talent is there at #30, you take the pick. DL or ILB.
