Matthews’ Interception Turns the Tide

James Jones 2In a game in which the Packers had two enemies to deal with…the Bears’ defense and the refs, a timely play by a veteran defender made the difference. With the Bears down by 8 but with plenty of time for a game-tying drive, Jay Cutler, who had had a pedestrian game up to this point, stepped up and threw…only to have his pass intercepted by Clay Matthews. Matthews made a great play on the ball and also had a great return which was (of course) called back by penalty.

But the interception stood and the Packers were able to convert the possession into an Eddie Lacy touchdown to put away a game that was far closer than it should have been.

Great players make great plays and Clay Matthews did just that. The play was remeniscent in single game importance though not even close in the prominence of the game itself as the “Spill it, Pickett” play in Super Bowl XV. Matthews continues to make plays when it counts.

James Jones made his presence known with four catches for 51 yards but most importantly, two touchdowns in his first reappearance in a Packers uniform. Davante Adams had four catches as well for 59 yards and Richard Rodgers came in to make a contribution in a year where he will be needed. A hurt Randall Cobb, it must be noted, led the team in catches with five catches and only 38 yards but a big touchdown catch when the team needed it.

By the end of the game, Martellus Bennett had a touchdown in what ended up to be garbage time as the Packers executed a perfect reception on the ensuing onside kick to effectively end the game.

All in all this win amounts to…a win. The Packers will have a lot to work on and we will be talking about that all week leading up to the Seahawks game (who are currently tied with the Rams). But what do you think Packernation? Leave your comments below or put em down back on the Facebook Fanpage.

The defense has a lot to work on. For the most part Forte couldn’t be stopped, and Cutler was able to get some yardage as a runner on important downs. They need to work on stopping the run, with a good running back and a QB who can run. Luckily, they will have the home crowd to make some noise when needed most.

I think the linebackers did a decent job no Barrington either might have hurt a little

But Hyde and Heyward seem to be rather average through this game and preseason
Thought shields had a 50/50 game
Demarious Randall needsto start at corner that kids impressive
