Melvin Gordon has History Making Performance for the Badgers

At GPN, we are always interested in great stories that affect Packernaion. Yesterday, many in melvin gordonPackernation celebrated as Melvin Gordon broke the FBS single game rushing record set by LaDanian Tomlinson in 1999, gaining 408 yards in just three quarters of play.

But what those who didn’t see the game may miss is the fact that this record came after Gordon and the Badgers struggled in the first quarter, Gordon having a couple fumbles and unable to get a push up the middle. The Badgers dug themselves a 3-17 hole and the defense that had been the only bright spot, began to tire. Then the coaching staff made some adjustments, and Melvin Gordon took this team on his back.

The Badgers decided to beat the Huskers to the edges and take the cutback if it wasn’t there, but more often than not, they beat the Huskers to the edges. Following some of the most dominant blocking the Badgers have done all year, Melvin Gordon was given holes that, combined with his vision and acceleration, became a revolving door to the endzone as Gordon scored four touchdowns with a long of 68 yards.

One of the most amazing points to this historical performance was the play that got the record for Melvin Gordon. With only six seconds remaining in the third quarter, and 26 yards to the endzone AND the record. Gordon took an inside handoff, got a block, and then split two defenders to break the plane of the endzone, and the single game rushing record.

So here’s to Melvin Gordon, one of Wisconsin’s own. History is worth celebrating and football fans everywhere celebrate with you today.

Watching and dreaming, that was my experience of the Badgers game. Watching intently and laughing with joy as the game broke open for the Badgers. Dreaming, because with the likelihood that an elite running back will likely fall to the late 1st round, I was visualizing a Packer red-zone offense set loaded for Bear(49s,Seahawks,Vikings…)with Cobb, Nelson, Rodgers, Lacy and Gordon for ammo. Picturing opposing defenses trying to shield themselves from those bullets!

Many RBs could have run through some of those holes provided by the O-line. But I can’t think of anyone throughout my 55 years who could have avoided some of those tackles down field. MG III’s ability to accelerate, hurdle at full speed, time his cuts, jukes, hurdles, and spins is simply phenomenal. He’s a team player and from everything I’ve read, a great human being. If he hadn’t shared time with Clement and sat out entire quarters (basically an entire half vs LSU), we could well have the first 3000 yard rusher in college history. Congrats and best wishes for the future Mr. Gordon. WiscONsin! :)
