Randall Cobb: Is He A Gonner In Green Bay?

090911_Randall-Cobb_400With less than a week to go before the start of free agency, Randall Cobb and the Green Bay Packers have not struck a deal. Reportedly, Cobb’s representation has rejected a five year deal worth between 8 and 9 million annually and if Cobb hits the open market, his chances of being resigned only decrease….

Randall Cobb had over 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2014 and may be looking to get paid beyond slot receiver salary. With Jordy Nelson signed last year, the Packers won’t be offering that kind of money to Cobb here in Green Bay.

So what would be the fallout should Cobb exit? Davante Adams had flashes last year and Jared Abbrederis has yet to prove his potential. Abbrederis, in particular, sat out last season with injury which leads to questions going into the 2015 season. Will he be 100% and if he is…will he reach his potential? Jeff Janis never had a chance to show what he could do either and both of these guys could suddenly get playing time if the Packers enter the next season without Randall Cobb.

While Richard Rogers did an admirable job as a rookie tight end, and Quarless had a good season, rodgersneither of these seem able to offset the loss of a guy like Randall Cobb and though the Packers could pick yet another tight end in this year’s draft…I personally don’t think there is a single tight end in this year’s draft that is going to ever be a difference maker. I know people are intrigued by Maxx Williams but…the guy’s name is Maxx…with TWO X’s…really!

It looks to me like Cobb’s days in Green Bay are numbered…let me be clear…I don’t think he will be back. But the Packers do have some interesting young wide receivers and have shown that they can develop receivers into great pros, plus…Aaron Rodgers makes ANY receiver better…period! So I think the Packers wide receiver corps will be fine.

Perhaps the exit of Randall will give the Packers some space to go after a difference making free agent? I know this is not typical of TT but he did bring us Picket, Woodson, and Peppers. Whatever happens, it looks like next year’s Packers may be a more changed group than Packernation would typically want. But what can you do except trust the leadership, trust the coaches, trust the players…and say…

Go Pack!

I have said all along while Cobb is worthy of a 10 million a year contract he will not get it in Green Bay plain and simple! If he chooses to leave for more money then he was not a consummate Packer in the first place, just as Jenning,Jones before him he will go play for a team that has no QB to make him look good and he will fade away in the NFL. If he chooses to stay for what Thompson offered he has a chance to win rings and also cash in a bigger payday down the road. Guess we see if he is loyal or a sell out real soon!

I agree completely Jeff. I will be angry and disappointed if Cobb leaves. I’d (mistakenly perhaps) assumed he was a Packer/team/man, but it is looking like NOT. The extra money he can make in the San Francisco area can just about pay for what it takes to live there! So, really, it comes out even. . . . :(

Cobb leaving has nothing to do with him being the “consummate Packer” as you say. So, just because the guy played for the Packers means he has accept less money to stay with the Packers or he’s just another greedy athlete? That’s ridiculous. There’s no loyalty from the NFL teams towards the players so why should the players show loyalty to the team?

Randall needs to remain a Packer. We need to take another step forward with him and Jordy while DaVante blossoms and a TE emerges….pay the man, TT, 18 will help us get #14….

So what you are saying is give in to Cobb’s greed and kiss off the other players that are going to become free agents.
It would make more sense to let one go and keep the others than to keep one and let the others go and have to start with a bunch of rookies that will take a few years to get to Super Bowl Caliber.

Open the pocket and negotiate. Just be careful Mr. Cobb, a little greed goes a long way. You will always have our respect for the heart you have put into your game.

There are other guys that want to get more money. They will also be Free Agents. If Ted does what Cobb wants he stands a chance of losing the other players to Free Agency.
I believe it would be better to let one go and keep the others than to let the others go and keep Cobb. Then Ted would have to take a lot of Rookies and it could take a few years to get them to Super Bowl Caliber.

Randall should take a look at what Peyton is going to do in Denver…I agree with the comments above, take what you can get and win some rings with the best QB in the game today. GB should not pay him what he wants for fear of squandering the future of the franchise…look at Chicago. We still have some rookies to sign on long term that are part of the group that protect Rodgers. Without them, we would be starting over in the front 5…let him go if he won’t sign for what they are offering.

Randall has never been paid like Peyton. Peyton has more money than he knows what to do with because he’s on his 3rd or 4th large contact and has a number of lucrative endorsement deals. It’s really easy for Peyton to restructure his deal. This is the first time that Randall will be able to really cash in so asking him to take less money just to remain with the Packers in hopes of winning a ring is not realistic.

I’m all for giving Cobb 8-9 mil/yr. But anything more is over paying for his talent and production. Hope this contract was based on too many incentives and they can still work something out, otherwise it’s time to adjust to life after Randall Cobb.

Why should they have to take less money to make Cobb happy? They’ve been with the Packers longer than Cobb has. They have Super Bowl rings and Cobb doesn’t. Cobb or his agent have gotten a little to greedy. Cobb has practically thumbed his nose at Green Bay. Nobody wants a greedy person. Greed is not an admirable trait.

Cobb will probably go for $1-2M more. I’m not going to say it’s greedy, but, unless it is with a superbowl caliber team and QB, it’s stupid. Many very talented WRs have faded on bad teams with poor QBs. It’s about winning. I hope he makes the right decision. If not, he’ll miss out on #14 GO PACK

Why would they do that? NFL is a business. Players play to make money. Why is it greedy to take an extra $2-$3 million per year if a team is willing to give it to you? What if he gets hurt again and can’t play any me like Finely? Will the Packer’s continue to pay his contract? No. They will cut him. Players today are showing the same loyalty the teams are Giving them.

If the Packers let Cobb leave then they MUST spend the money to strengthen the defense (Nose tackle and ILB)and bolster the O line. Tough to lose Cobb as he fits so well with Rodgers. Very upsetting period.

There’s quite a few players that will become free agents this year. It’s better to let one player walk and save the rest of the players than it would to keep one player and lose the others to Free Agency.

A few years back we had a promising young reciever who left Greenbay because he thought he was all that. Javon Walker was his his name I believe. I give credit to Mr. Cobb he is good at the game but part of that is the system too. My point is Mr.Cobb think about the teams that will be after you? What is the system they use? Will you be as successful? Most of all and most important your fans will they embrace you like the ones in Wisconsin. The Pack is putting a good deal on the table don’t get greedy. You will be hard pressed to find a better team to play with sir.

Ted is doing what is best for the team whether you like it or not. Cobb is not the only player that is going to Free Agency. What should he do? Sign one guy that wants way more money than he’s worth and lose the other players to Free Agency or let one go and keep the other players?

if Cobb wants to be on a winning team he needs to keep his butt in Green Bay.money shouldn’t bring happiness. 8-9 million is excellent money for a 4th year player.Randall it’s time to STOP being Greedy !! Nelson,is better than YOU
don’t be an idiot and go to the team with the most money.you’ll probably end up on a losing team..my advise keep your ass in Green Bay

No one knows what the future holds. Anyone could take a bad hit and go down. If I have a choice, I want Randall Cobb on my team as long as he can make it. He has to do what is best for him. It’s his life. I wish him no regrets, no matter what comes down the road.

People have short memories. Yes. Cobb last year was a spectacular year for a slot receiver. But remember he missed a lot of games due to injury over his career. NFL players have a short shelf life. While I hope he would take the Packer’S offer, he’d be nuts to not take another team’S offer if it pays $2-$3 million per year. If he breaks his leg again and can’t play again (Finley) that money is still taking care of his family for the rest of his life.

D Adams showed “flashes” early last season, but in the 2nd half of the season, he became more consistent & ARod & MM seemed to trust him, sometimes in key situations. Barring injury, Adams & R Rodgers will become better this season. It’ll take a team effort to make up for cobb’s loss. & depending on FA & draft, Abbrederis will be looked upon to produce as well. If we draft another decent TE, MM will put more double TE plays in the book.

After reviewing the Ted Thompson draft list since 2005, it’s an incredible record of success finding and drafting the right people. We will miss Cobb if he leaves, but, in Ted I Trust.
